---the big bands---

  • The most common type of metal is heavy metal!! Its good for people starting out on alt music, and the community has been around for the longest. The bands who popularized the genre are Black Sabbath and Judas Priest.

  • Alternative Metal is a personal favorite. It has heavy alternative rock influence, derives from heavy metal, and even has grunge influence. Popular bands are Deftones and Alice in Chains.

  • From what ive seen, people have some pretty strong opinions of Progressive Metal. In my perspective, it was introduced after combining certain styles of metal and progressive rock, hense the name, with the style of guitar comming from previous experimental genres. For me, it isnt very easy to identify progressive metal, but I do know Tool was a popular American early Prog Metal band.

  • I have a love/hate relashonship with Death/ Melodic Death Metal. While its very popular, its not super easy to get into and i dont enjoy finding bands i actually like. Popular bands i like are Cannible Corpse and Death.

  • Nu Metal is the most hated, but one of my favorite subgenres over anything. Nu Metal has hip hop influences, because of the area it orignated from, and i find that really cool. The bands that intrduced it and i recommend are a Korn, Limp Bizkit, and Linkin Park.

  • I will always love groove metal. Groove metal is one of those subgenres you can go very experimental with. Groove Metal does branch off of Thrash and you can definitaly hear it. I would do some research if i were you because Groove Metal has a lot of inticate details like the guitar style and tempo. Lamb of God and,controversially, Pantera are great Groove Metal bands that popularized the subgenre.

  • And we are finally at Thrash Metal!! What can i say about Thrash Metal. It is one of the most commonly known and for an extremly good reason. Personally, Thrash got me into metal, and it can get you into it too!! This is objectively the best genre to show newbies and to research into. The community is amazing too!! The most popular thrash bands are Pantera, Slayer, Megadeath, Metallica, Judas Priest, and Iron Maiden. As you can tell, Its popular and has a wide variety.

  • Glam/Hair Metal isnt really well known from what iv seen. But most people, even if they arent into metal, have heard of some of the bands. The bands that introduced Glam are Motley Crue and Kiss.

    (info from Reddit, Wikipedia, and some magazine/article websites) As excpected, metal came from rock. rock originated from the U.S during (accoridng to encyclopidia and wikipedia) the 1940s and early 1950s. While rock got more and more popular, metal made its way into media in the late '60s and early '70s. Metal originatex from heavy rock, and bands' experiments slowly evolving. Thats where the metal started as a subgenre. Metal is still a subgenre of rock, but its grown a substantial amount. Its community is so large you will likely see a metalhead almost every time you are out in public.


    Metal immediatly started to get popular with bands Led Zepplin, and Black Sabbath. The genre slowly evolved from its rock and blues origin with eccentric guitar of Van Halen, punk rock starting to become more popular, and bands like Judas Priest leaving behind the blues infuluence metal originally featured. Fastforward, Metal becomes worldwide, and when things get more loved, they get more hated. Like almost every genre and/or artist in that genre, if you have a lot of fans, you will naturally have a lot of... haters .... In the 1970s and '80s, metal is heavely stereotyped and fans face a lot of community-hate. Metal is described as "satastic" (not true) and "angry music". Sadly, people start associating the metal screams with anger instead of passion. This is still something communities face.


    After the world got slightly more used to the metal community, the subgenre tree just grew and grew. Glam metal, introduces how expiremental and different all these subgenres can be. I cant really name all off the sungenres because of how many there are, but you can find metal mixed with almost anything by now.
